blogTO This Week: Jewels, Bikes and Doors

I’ve been making a concerted effort to start writing more lately, and stepped it up this week a bit over at blogTO. This week’s posts I wrote included:

Bax Bears World Tour

I covered the launch of the Bax Bears World Tour leg in Toronto both on blogTO and Dear Toronto this week.
Art Attack’s Snow Blitzkrieg

With anywhere from 15-30 cm of snow expected in the GTA by tomorrow morning brought on by a “Godzilla-like” storm, some are (clearly) busy making hyberbolic news headlines, while others are salivating over the thought of “commuter chaos.”
Thankfully, there’s a brighter side to a major winter storm striking the GTA, and the Toronto Public Spacing Committee’s Art Attack crew are taking more of glass-half-full style approach to the whole ordeal. Liam O’Doherty of the TPSC sent a bulletin earlier inviting one and all to their Snow Fort Build.

Liveblogging Nuit Blanche

I just got in a few hours ago from liveblogging the 12 hour Nuit Blanche. It was quite the experience to say the least. Check out the results at blogTO.
Your Guide to Nuit Blanche 2007

We’re mere days away from one of the city’s most anticipated artistic events of the year, and there’s certainly no shortage of buzz going along with this year’s Nuit Blanche. Dubbed the “free all-night contemporary art thing”, the Parisian-inspired Nuit Blanche will go on this Saturday from 7:03pm to sunrise on Sunday.
For those who had the chance to see some of what went down at last year’s event, and even for those who missed out, there was an unmistakable feeling of excitement and energy surrounding the night. This year, the 12-hour arts fest will be bigger than ever, with expanded zones and a surge in artist participation, it’s sure to be one hell of a night.
We’ve got you covered with an exhaustive guide and our picks for what to check out in each of the zones, as well as an interactive map for browsing the exhibits. All that, and more, after the jump.
Commuters GO Mad at Rush Hour Chaos

If you hadn’t heard it on the news already, there was mass crowding and chaos at Union Station as Toronto Police and GO officials faced the consequences of a nasty pedestrian fatality near Eglinton station earlier today.
Trains beginning at around 4pm were delayed or canceled outright just as rush hour passengers poured into Union Station only to face red and yellow text across the departure screens. Many sighed and cursed as they knew they were in for long delays, and because this wasn’t a first-time occurrence for many. In fact, it happens all too often both on GO Transit’s lines and the TTC’s subway tunnels. Why are we so acclimatized to this kind of thing happening that it barely even makes front page news in the papers?

Beer Fest & Porter at blogTO
I’ve got two new ones at blogTO, one quick notice about this weekend’s annual Beer Festival, another more extensive piece about my experience on Porter Airlines this weekend:
Dollar Beers this Weekend at the Beer Fest
If Wakestock didn’t bring enough incoherent, drunken frat boys (*cough*) out into the street, get ready for a quick one-two punch to the city as the 12th annual Toronto Festival of Beer kicks off this weekend.
This year, the festival is promising to be bigger than ever with several “satellite” events also planned around the GTA, and featuring over 200 brands of beer accompanied by some delicious BBQ action and live music.
TO to MTL: The Porter Experience
I make a habit out of making a trip out to Montreal just about every year as time permits. Up until this year I’ve always made my way out there using VIA Rail. But now with new kids Porter Airlines on the scene, offering a flight to Montreal for a scant few more dollars than taking the train (not to mention saving nearly four hours of transit time - Porter takes about an hour), it’s now a tempting alternative.
Granted, it’s not the greenest option for traveling, and its long-term viability has been called into question on a number of occasions, but I figured it worth it just for the experience alone. As it turns out, not only was it a totally painless way to travel, but pleasant even. Who knew air travel could be enjoyable?
I’m likely going to take a bit of a breather from blogging since (among other things) I have an upcoming article I’m working on that will be published in a Toronto mag soon. More details on that a little later on.
