The Movement Movement Runs Again
Fresh “off the presses” at blogTO, The Movement Movement Runs Again.
Chasing his Shadow
PostSecret
I wrote about PostSecret’s Frank Warren coming to Toronto a couple months back, which I sadly missed. PS has, and likely always will rank up there among my fav blogs to read. It’s also the most difficult to read though, revealing a lot of sometimes twisted things about people and the world in general.
Frank has put together a video describing the concept behind PS, and what he’s dealt with since starting the blog in its humble roots a few years back. Not only is the content of this blog moving, but it’s perfectly suited for this medium, as is usually the case with projects that bridge the gap between physical and virtual.
Suburban Imagery
This warning illustration on green electrical boxes around the GTA (and elsewhere?) always has made me chuckle, though it’s an effective means of communicating to kids about the danger of these things.
Aug. 11 Design Review
I just unearthed myself from thousands upon thousands of unread RSS items, with at least a thousand in the design category alone. It was an exercise in speed-reading, to say the least. Here’s some of the good stuff that goes back at least two to three weeks.
- Anh Ta at product dose laments about the lack of non-fugly backpacks in the market. Meanwhile, Nike releases their 3-Way Commuter Bag that looks perfectly suited for my new lifestyle working downtown. My name’s Adam and I have a problem with buying bags.
- When I first heard Chemical Brothers’ new album, I knew Salmon Dance was bound to have an off-the-wall, potentially insane video. I’ve got to say I kind of expected a little more, but it’s an awesome animation nonetheless.
- Creepy but cool - Bored of stuffing the pet dog after he sees the light? Get your own Custom Creation Taxidermy. Mash-ups meet taxidermy! (No joke) [via NOTCOT]
- Scottish Designer David Taylor and his minimalistic beauty Glasgow Lamp. [also via NC]
- Josh Spear is delighted that the 9 VOLTS snap-on 9-volt battery lamps are now available
- I love houses like this, this, and this. Sounds like the whole pre-fab thing is going to take off like crazy soon.
- Presentation Zen gets into the good stuff from Steve Jobs’ press event last week where they announced the beautiful new aluminum iMac and new super-thin Apple keyboard. (Quick aside - note the simplicity in Apple marketing goes right down to product URLs. I didn’t even have to look them up for each of these products, it was just /iMac and /keyboard right off the TLD)
- Torontoist has a beautiful panorama of the bridge at Harbourfront as part of their Panoramaist series, which is a few minutes away from my new office.
Whew, to say that was cathartic would be a bit of an understatement.
Astronaut

I’ve been waiting to watch this all week, but with several thousand news items waiting, it got lost in the shuffle. The music video for the song Astronaut pulls photos from Flickr for each lyric in the song on the fly. I love this kind of stuff.
Placeholders
My trip to Montreal this weekend saw many encounters with these bizarre empty lots. Most were just holes in the ground, presumably in place of a new condo.
This one was interesting though. Not only did it give a great range of colour, but it made me wonder if they’re ever going to build anything here again. I love the cartoon art in the background here, and took about a dozen shots of this scene, so I’ll likely be posting another perspective when I get a moment to breathe this week.
Beer Fest & Porter at blogTO
I’ve got two new ones at blogTO, one quick notice about this weekend’s annual Beer Festival, another more extensive piece about my experience on Porter Airlines this weekend:
Dollar Beers this Weekend at the Beer Fest
If Wakestock didn’t bring enough incoherent, drunken frat boys (*cough*) out into the street, get ready for a quick one-two punch to the city as the 12th annual Toronto Festival of Beer kicks off this weekend.
This year, the festival is promising to be bigger than ever with several “satellite” events also planned around the GTA, and featuring over 200 brands of beer accompanied by some delicious BBQ action and live music.
TO to MTL: The Porter Experience
I make a habit out of making a trip out to Montreal just about every year as time permits. Up until this year I’ve always made my way out there using VIA Rail. But now with new kids Porter Airlines on the scene, offering a flight to Montreal for a scant few more dollars than taking the train (not to mention saving nearly four hours of transit time - Porter takes about an hour), it’s now a tempting alternative.
Granted, it’s not the greenest option for traveling, and its long-term viability has been called into question on a number of occasions, but I figured it worth it just for the experience alone. As it turns out, not only was it a totally painless way to travel, but pleasant even. Who knew air travel could be enjoyable?
I’m likely going to take a bit of a breather from blogging since (among other things) I have an upcoming article I’m working on that will be published in a Toronto mag soon. More details on that a little later on.
August’s Montreal Sojourn
I’m sitting right now in Montreal at Victoria Square, my flight having been delayed by two hours until around 10pm tonight.
It’s been a really great trip. Fantastic weather all throughout, until today anyways. We saw a bit of rain this morning, but it was beautiful for the rest of the day. In any case, I fly back home tonight on Porter which, if the flight in was any indication, will be entirely painless and real quick.
Shown above is one of the many statues found in Montreal. I can’t recall the context of this one, but took some liberties with the contrast/lighting here.
Back to reality tomorrow!
